When to use percentage change

Percentage change compares a new value with an original value. It answers questions like “How much did this change?” or “Is the new number higher or lower than before?” The result can be positive, negative or zero.

For example, if website visits move from 1,000 to 1,250, the change is +25%. If a price goes from 80 to 60, the change is -25%. This makes percentage change useful for sales, traffic, prices, costs, grades, revenue, weight, time and any situation where one number replaces another.

Use this calculator when the order matters: the first number is the starting point and the second number is the new value.

Formula

(New number − Original number) ÷ Original number × 100
