When to use percentage difference
Percentage difference compares two numbers without treating either one as the original value. Instead of measuring change from a starting point, it measures the gap between the numbers compared with their average.
For example, if one quote is 80 and another quote is 100, the percentage difference is about 22.22%. This is different from saying that 80 increased to 100, which would be a 25% change. Percentage difference is useful when you are comparing two values side by side, such as two prices, two measurements, two estimates, two test results or two suppliers.
Use percentage difference when the order does not matter. Switching the two numbers gives the same result.
Formula
|First number − Second number| ÷ ((First number + Second number) ÷ 2) × 100
FAQ
Is percentage difference the same as percentage change?
No. Percentage change needs a starting value. Percentage difference compares two numbers equally.
Can percentage difference be negative?
No. Percentage difference is always shown as a positive value.
When should I avoid percentage difference?
Avoid it when one number is clearly the original value and the other is the new value. In that case, use percentage change.
