When to use percentage increase

Percentage increase is for situations where a value goes up. It tells you how much larger the new number is compared with the original number. The starting value matters because the increase is measured relative to where you began.

For example, if monthly revenue grows from 45,000 to 52,000, the increase is measured against 45,000. If a product price rises from 80 to 100, the increase is not simply 20 points: it is a 25% increase because 20 is one quarter of the original 80.

Use this calculator for growth, price rises, salary increases, traffic gains, cost increases and any case where the new value should be higher than the original value.

Formula

(New number − Original number) ÷ Original number × 100

FAQ

What if the new number is lower?

Then the result is a decrease, not an increase. The calculator will show that clearly.

Why is 80 to 100 a 25% increase?

The increase is 20, and 20 is 25% of the original number 80.

Is percentage increase different from percentage change?

Percentage increase is a positive type of percentage change. Percentage change can also be negative.
